The government move comes after social media backlash against the popular smartphone messaging app Line for having stickers with gay themes in its online store. Information and Communication Ministry spokesman Ismail Cawidu said Thursday social media and messaging platforms should drop stickers expressing support for the LGBT community — a common abbreviation for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender — an effort Line agreed to do, according to a statement on its Facebook page.

He said of particular concern was that the colourful emojis and stickers could appeal to children. Cawidu said the ministry had contacted all companies that used such content, including Twitter and Facebook, and failure to comply with the request to remove the emojis could lead to the apps being banned in Indonesia.
