I should have specified but I'm looking to find out about the NUMBERS of gay people in the Baltimore area and not so much about how gay friendly the city itself might be.
For example, a small town in the middle of nowhere could be very open to and accepting of gays but if there is only a miniscule number of gay individuals there, it doesn't really provide much in terms of dating options. I have no idea how you would find the numbers, but I have heard many times that there are lots of gays in the Baltimore area, also lots of gays in DC. Baltimore has been known among gays as the San Francisco of the East because of the gay friendly laws in Baltimore City which have attracted gays from surrounding states.

Patterson Park, Baltimore. Like others have said, Mount Vernon is the "gayborhood," so I would look to live there since that's where most of the gay bars are located. I can't speak to University of Maryland, but I work at Hopkins and I know plenty of gay grad students, med students, doctors, and other healthcare professionals that work here.
